Spring Break at the Library
From March 7-15, your library has 115 opportunities to learn something new and have fun.
From storytime to movies to money smart workshop and beyond, your library has you covered for a free Spring Break week of edutaining fun. Below are some highlights of upcoming events, but you can check out our handy guide on our website to see what’s happening daily.
These event are for a variety of interests and ages, including programs specifically for preschoolers, teens and adults. See the entire Engage brochure to plan the rest of your spring season at the library.
Spotlight Art with Caterina Provost-Smith (all ages)
The second local artist in the new Spotlight Art series this spring is expressionist artist Caterina Provost-Smith. In her multimedia paintings, she incorporates drawings of the human face and figure, animals, botanical elements and forces of nature. With each Spotlight Art, you have an opportunity to see a live demonstration from the artist, then make your own masterpiece.
Watch Caterina complete a large-scale abstract painting with nature themes and bright colors on Saturday, March 7 from 2-5 p.m. at Schimelpfenig Library. The demonstration is for all ages and open to all to view.
Create your own original abstract painting with a nature theme involving a weather element and an animal or insect on Saturday, March 14 from 2-4 p.m. at Schimelpfenig Library. The workshop is ticketed, so show up by 1:30 p.m. to get a spot.
Readers & Waggers (grades K-5)
During Readers and Waggers, kids in grades K-5 can read their favorite book – either from home or the library – to a Heart of Texas Therapy dog. This series meets monthly through May, with the next session at Haggard Library on Sunday, March 8 at 2 p.m. Space is limited, so show up by 1:30 p.m. to get a ticket.
Meet Storybook Characters (all ages)
Splat the Cat and Clifford the Big Red Dog are coming to the library over spring break, with multiple chances to see these storytime faves. Each event includes a storytime and fun activities:
Clifford: Harrington Library on Monday, March 9 at 10:30 a.m., Davis Library on Wednesday, March 11 at 7 p.m., and Parr Library on Saturday, March 14 at 10:30 a.m.
Splat the Cat: Haggard Library on Monday, March 9 6:30 p.m. and Schimelpfenig Library on Wednesday, March 11 at 10:30 a.m.
Chain Reaction Challenge (all ages)
During this program, you’ll learn about kinetic and potential energy by designing and building your own chain reaction. Hear about the history of Rube Goldberg machines and through a series of fun challenges, create your own with your neighbors, such as:
- Open a book
- Pop a balloon
- Ring a bell
- Pull a tissue out of a tissue box
- Open a box
- Kick a ball into the “goal”
- Squeeze out sanitizer from hand sanitizer bottle
Chain Reaction Challenge meets on Thursday, March 12 at 3 p.m. at Schimelpfenig Library. This event is ticketed, so show up by 2:30 p.m. to get a spot.
Tiny Techies (ages 3-5)
In Tiny Techies, we’ll introduce you and your preschooler to technology concepts in this special story time series. In each session you and your child will hear stories, learn a new coding and technology topic and get hands-on with age-appropriate devices. Tiny Techies meets on Friday, March 13 at 11 a.m. at Haggard Library. Tiny Techies is a ticketed event, so show up by 10:30 a.m. to get a spot.
