Financial Literacy Tip: Comparative Shopping Using Consumer Reports

Do you want to make sure you are getting the best value for your money? The Plano Public Library has the resources to help!

Consumer Reports

All of our locations have copies of Consumer Reports that you can view inside the library – just ask at the nearest reference or information desk. Consumer Reports rates everything from refrigerators and dishwashers to computers and smart phones. They also list pricing information and special features, so you can make sure you are picking the best item to meet your needs.

You can also find Consumer Reports digitally directly through the library website:

  1. Start at planolibrary.org, and use the “Search the Library” search box at the top of the page to look for “consumer reports”
  2. On the next screen, there is a grey box near the top that says “Consumer Reports” and “Search within the Publication” – you can use this search box for specific items or topics you are looking for within Consumer Reports
  3. Browse the results. Click “Full Text PDF” for a PDF of the article.
Consumer Reports Buying Guide

We also have copies of the Consumer Reports Buying Guide. This is a bigger, annual guide that is packed with all the facts you need to know about the latest products.

If you’d like to research items from the comfort of your home, you can also view the Consumer Reports Buying Guide on Flipster, which is available with your library card. To access Flipster, click this link, and enter your library card number, located on the back of the card.

For more information about Flipster, check out our previous blog post.

Once you access Flipster, you can search for the Consumer Reports Buying Guide. The best part? You can check out all issues dating back to 2015.

We hope that these resources help you on your financial literacy journey. Check out more of our Thinking Money posts, including booklists. You can find all of these and more at your local Plano Public Library!
