The Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman

What do four septuagenarians living at a posh English countryside retirement community, do in their spare time? Answer: they meet on Thursdays and discuss cold case murders. When Police Constable Donna De Freitas visits the group to discuss safety, she is disarmed and charmed by their astuteness. But the foursome, led by Elizabeth, a possible former spy, Ibrahim, a psychiatrist, Joyce, a former nurse, and Ron, a retired union organizer, turn discussion into action and go into high crime-solving gear when the real estate developer of their community is murdered. Donna De Freitas and the rest of the local constabulary have their hands full! These four are a cut above the usual senior citizens; no knitting or bridge playing for them. Lots of wonderful smart characters with plenty of wit and a first-rate mystery to solve.

book review

Osman’s witty prose (labor activist Ron’s “picture was rarely in the papers without the caption ‘Talks between the two sides collapsed late last night’”) is a highlight. Fans of Lynne Truss’s Constable Twitten mysteries will be tickled. – Publisher’s Weekly

The character-driven mystery, featuring a group of sleuths all too aware of their own mortality, and a likable pair of cops, is suspenseful, funny, and poignant. VERDICT The delightful, spirited characters from this witty, sometimes bittersweet story deserve a return engagement. – Library Journal

This is the first novel from British author Richard Osman. Osman is well known in Britain as a comedian and for his television appearances. He has also created several popular game shows. The movie rights for The Thursday Murder Club have been acquired by Steven Spielberg.
