Plano Reads: Classic Mysteries

For our June Mystery Book Club meeting, we are going back in time with Classic Mysteries. If you love everything from Arthur Conan Doyle to Agatha Christie, this is your month! Join us in-person at Davis Library or virtually through Zoom on Thursday, June 20th at 7 pm. If you would like to attend virtually, you can register here

This month, our Mystery Book Club librarians are excited to dive back into the classics: Emery is finally reading And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie (Print | eBook | eAudio) as well as The Conjure-Man Dies by Rudolph Fisher (Print). Meredith is reading Death on the Air and Other Stories by Ngaio Marsh, Shutter Island by Dennis Lehane (Print | eBook | eAudio), and The Mysterious Affair at Styles by Agatha Christie (Print | eBook | eAudio).

If you aren’t sure where to get started with this theme, check out some classic mystery suggestions gathered by our librarians.

Devil in a Blue Dress by Walter Mosley (Print | CD Book

The year is 1948, the town is Los Angeles.

Easy Rawlins, a black war veteran, has just been fired from his job at a defense factory plant. Drinking in his friend’s bar, he’s wondering how he’ll manage to make ends meet, when a white man in a linen suit approaches him and offers him good money if Easy will simply locate Miss Daphne Money, a missing blonde beauty known to frequent black jazz clubs.

Easy has no idea that by taking this job, his life is about to change forever.

The Big Sleep by Raymond Chandler (Print | eAudio

A dying millionaire hires private eye Philip Marlowe to handle the blackmailer of one of his two troublesome daughters, and Marlowe finds himself involved with more than extortion. Kidnapping, pornography, seduction, and murder are just a few of the complications he gets caught up in.

Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy by John Le Carré (Print | eBook | eAudio

The man he knew as “Control” is dead, and the young Turks who forced him out now run the Circus. But George Smiley isn’t quite ready for retirement–especially when a pretty, would-be defector surfaces with a shocking accusation: a Soviet mole has penetrated the highest level of British Intelligence. Relying only on his wits and a small, loyal cadre, Smiley recognizes the hand of Karla–his Moscow Centre nemesis–and sets a trap to catch the traitor.

The Talented Mr. Ripley by Patricia Highsmith (Print | eBook

In a chilling literary hall of mirrors, Patricia Highsmith introduces Tom Ripley. Like a hero in a latter-day Henry James novel, Ripley is sent to Italy with a commission to coax a prodigal young American back to his wealthy father. But Ripley finds himself very fond of Dickie Greenleaf. He wants to be like him–exactly like him. Suave, agreeable, and utterly amoral, Ripley stops at nothing–certainly not only one murder–to accomplish his goal. Turning the mystery form inside out, Highsmith shows the terrifying abilities afforded to a man unhindered by the concept of evil.

The Name of the Rose by Umberto Eco (Print | eBook | eAudio

In 1327, Brother William of Baskerville is sent to investigate a wealthy Italian abbey whose monks are suspected of heresy. When his mission is overshadowed by seven bizarre deaths patterned on the book of Revelation, Brother William turns detective, following the trail of a conspiracy that brings him face-to-face with the abbey’s labyrinthine secrets, the subversive effects of laughter, and the medieval Inquisition. Caught in a power struggle between the emperor he serves and the pope who rules the Church, Brother William comes to see that what is at stake is larger than any mere political dispute-that his investigation is being blocked by those who fear imagination, curiosity, and the power of ideas.
